Fire Risk Mitigation for Josephine County
We're blessed to live in such a richly wooded area. Over 75% of Josephine county is covered by forest land. Along with this blessing comes the seasonal risk of wildfires and the responsibility to minimize risk. Here are some actions you can take to reduce the risk to your property and your neighbors.
1. Create a Defensible Space Creation
Zone 1 (0-30 feet): Keep this area well-irrigated and free from combustible materials. Remove dead vegetation, keep plants trimmed and grass cut low.
Zone 2 (30-100 feet): Reduce the density of trees and shrubs. Prune tree branches up to 10 feet from the ground and space trees adequately.
2. Choose Fire-Resistant Landscaping
Plants: Choose fire-resistant plants that retain moisture and are less likely to ignite.
Materials: Use non-flammable materials like rock, gravel, or stone for landscaping.
3. Keep up Regular Maintenance
Gutters and Roofs: Clean gutters and roofs regularly to prevent the accumulation of leaves and other flammable debris.
Vents: Make sure vent screens are free from tears and defects.
Under Decks: Remove any flammable materials stored under decks and keep the area clear.
4. Use Fire-Resistant Construction
Building Materials: Use fire-resistant materials for roofing, siding, and decks. Options include metal, tile, and fire-treated wood.
Vents and Openings: Install ember-resistant vents to prevent embers from entering your home.
5. Be Prepared for Emergencies
Evacuation Plan: Develop and practice an evacuation plan with your family.
Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essential items, including food, water, medications, and important documents.
6. Get Involved
Firewise Program: Participate in community efforts like the Firewise Program to collectively reduce fire risks in your neighborhood.
